Phthalic Anhydride (PA) is a principal commercial form of phthalic acid, discovered in 1836. It was the first anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid to be used commercially, and is comparable in its importance to acetic acid. The most important reaction of Phthalic Anhydride is with alcohols or diols to give esters or polyesters.

 Plants

The plant is located at MIDC, Taloja in Raigad District, Maharashtra, India, 50 Km away from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Nhavasheva.

IGPL operates it's plant based on the processes of the licensor, M/s Wacker Chemie GmbH, Germany. The process is Wacker's Von-Heyden's Low Energy Process and the plant has been engineered by M/s mg Lurgi Frankfurt, Gerrmany.

 Production

IGPL has increased its production from 45,000 MT per annum to 120,000 MT per annum, making it one of the largest manufacturer of Phthalic Anhydride. I G Petrochemicals uses the Orthoxylene Oxidation method for manufacture of Phthalic Anhydride. The process involves an exothermic reaction and is used to produce high-pressure steam that makes the plant self-sufficient in power and steam requirements. The I G Petrochemicals plant is, therefore, one of the most cost-effective plants for the production of Phthalic Anhydride in the world. Stringent quality control parameters and regular upgrading of technology ensures the international customer of a very high quality product.

 Packaging

Phthalic Anhydride from the IGPL's plant is supplied in the form of flakes packaged in HDPE/PP woven bags. Sizes vary according to the quantity in weights, which comes in 25/500/750 kilograms net.

 Applications

Phthalic Anhydride is an important industrial chemical required for the manufacture of:

Phthalate Plasticizers
Used for the production of flexible PVC products such as cables, pipes and hoses, leather cloth, shoes, film for packaging etc.

Alkyd Resins
Used in the manufacture of paints

Dyes and Pigments
Used in the manufacture of textiles and printing inks
