Environmental Responsibility
Sustainability at IGPL means process efficiency, byproduct recovery, and operational discipline — not pledges without substance.
Our Approach
IGPL's core sustainability lever is the Von-Heyden Low Energy Process. Developed by Wacker Chemie, this catalytic vapour-phase oxidation process is among the most energy-efficient routes to phthalic anhydride globally. Running this process at five plants across decades of operation is itself an environmental achievement — the same throughput requires less energy per tonne than older generation processes.
Byproduct recovery is the second pillar. Maleic anhydride, benzoic acid, and diethyl phthalate are not waste streams — they are fully recovered products that would otherwise be combusted or discharged. IGPL's byproduct recovery systems extract economic and environmental value from every step of the oxidation reaction.
The third pillar is operational continuity. Stable, continuous operations reduce startup and shutdown emissions, minimise off-spec production, and enable precise process control. Our DCS-managed plants run with instrumentation-level oversight across every critical parameter.
Environmental Performance
Von-Heyden Low Energy Process requires less steam and cooling per tonne than earlier-generation fixed-bed processes. Five plants. Same process discipline.
Maleic anhydride, benzoic acid, and DEP are fully recovered rather than combusted. Zero waste co-product philosophy across the entire oxidation sequence.
Dedicated effluent treatment plants at Taloja campus. Discharge standards maintained per MPCB and CPCB norms at all times.
Continuous online monitoring of stack emissions. Gas cleaning systems on all process lines. Regular third-party environmental audits.
Closed-loop cooling circuits where applicable. Water recycling and recirculation across the campus. Water use per tonne tracked against operational benchmarks.
Process safety management program covering all five PA plants. HAZOP-reviewed operations. Safety incident tracking and near-miss reporting systems.
Process Technology
The core of IGPL's production system is the catalytic vapour-phase oxidation of ortho-xylene over a vanadium pentoxide catalyst. The Von-Heyden Low Energy Process variant reduces heat input requirements compared to earlier designs, enabling the same PA yield at lower per-tonne energy intensity.
Heat recovery systems integrated into reactor design
Continuous DCS monitoring eliminates batch-start emissions
Catalyst management program extends run life and reduces change-out frequency
Regulatory Compliance
Maharashtra Pollution Control Board norms for effluent, emissions, and hazardous waste. Regular third-party environmental audits conducted and results submitted to regulatory authorities.
Central Pollution Control Board standards applied across all operational parameters. Consent to Operate maintained and renewed through statutory processes for all five plants.
Factories Act compliance, periodic safety audits, and statutory reporting maintained across all five plants. Occupational health surveillance programs in place for all personnel.
Compliance data and environmental reports are available to regulatory authorities on request. IGPL publishes statutory disclosures as required under Indian environmental law.
Beyond the plant boundary, IGPL's CSR program addresses education, health, and community development in the Taloja region.
